The short answer: Xcaret is the original eco-archaeological park, opened in 1990 by Miguel Quintana Pali. Hotel Xcaret is the adjacent resort complex — three separate hotels (Hotel Xcaret México 2017, Hotel Xcaret Arte 2021, Casa de la Playa 2022) that share the brand. The park is one of six Grupo Xcaret parks. The hotels bundle access to all six, plus the Xenotes tour, via All-Fun-Inclusive.

The history — how this all happened

Miguel Quintana Pali, a Mexican architect, bought 12 hectares of jungle near Playa del Carmen in the early 1980s, intending to build himself a house. He found cenotes, underground rivers, and Mayan ruins on the property and shifted plans. Xcaret park opened to the public in 1990 as Mexico's first eco-archaeological park.

For 27 years, Xcaret was just the park. Visitors came from Cancún and Playa hotels, did the park, went home. Grupo Xcaret expanded across that period — Xel-Há in 1994, Xplor in 2009, Xenses in 2016 — but the core was always the day-trip park experience.

In 2017, Grupo Xcaret opened Hotel Xcaret México adjacent to the original park. The pitch was unique: an all-inclusive that bundled admission to every park in the family. They called it All-Fun-Inclusive. Arte followed in 2021, Casa de la Playa in 2022.

For deeper history, the Grupo Xcaret history covers the founder's story.

What Xcaret Park is

Xcaret park is a 200-acre nature park with:

  • A network of underground rivers you can swim through (complete guide)
  • A natural snorkeling lagoon
  • A reconstructed Mayan village
  • Animal exhibits including jaguars, tapirs, manatees, sea turtles
  • The Butterfly Pavilion (one of the largest in the world)
  • The Mayan Cemetery
  • A daily evening show — Xcaret México Espectacular — that's one of the best things in Riviera Maya (show secrets)
  • Multiple restaurants (best park dining)
  • Several beach areas (snorkeling beach review)

Park hours run roughly 8:30 AM to 11 PM. Day passes start around $120 for Basic; Plus adds a buffet lunch, one beer, a locker and snorkel gear, and Xcaret at Night gets you in from 4 p.m. for the show (day pass breakdown).

What Hotel Xcaret is

Hotel Xcaret is the umbrella for three separate resort properties:

Hotel Xcaret México (2017): The flagship. Family-friendly, all-suite, 1,800 suites in 10 Casas since a 2025 expansion, 16 pools, kids' club, the largest restaurant network (20 restaurants). Best value tier and the property I recommend first to most travelers (honest room review).

Hotel Xcaret Arte (2021): The design-forward sister property. 900 suites, adults-only (16+), themed around six Casas (workshops, classes, spa). About 25 to 35 percent more expensive than México for equivalent suites (Arte vs México breakdown).

La Casa de la Playa (2022): The luxury splurge. 63 suites, beachfront, adults-only, butler service. Closer to Aman pricing than to a standard all-inclusive (Casa de la Playa luxury review).

All three include All-Fun-Inclusive — seven Grupo Xcaret parks and tours bundled, plus the Xailing ferries, food, and drinks. Pricing detailed in how much does Hotel Xcaret cost.

How they connect

Hotel Xcaret resort sits adjacent to Xcaret park, but they're walled off from each other. Hotel guests don't wander into the park casually — there are separated entrances.

The connection is by boat. The hotel's underground river network includes a stretch that runs into Xcaret park. Hotel guests catch the boat shuttle from a dock inside the resort, float down the river, and disembark at a private hotel-only entrance inside the park. It's the most distinctive feature of the property and the thing I like most about staying there.

Day-trippers don't use this boat. They drive (or shuttle) to the main park entrance off Highway 307 and enter through the standard gates.

Pricing — how the two compare

Park day pass: $120 to $280 per adult per day, half for kids. One park, one day.

Hotel stay (All-Fun-Inclusive): $450 to $3,500+ per night with admission to seven Grupo Xcaret parks and tours (Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xenses, Xoxi (formerly Xoximilco), Xenotes) for the duration of your stay.

The math:

  • Two adults, one Xcaret park day pass each: $440 to $560 total
  • Two adults, one night at Hotel Xcaret México: $450 to $700 (and you get all seven parks and tours during your stay)

For a single park day, a day pass plus a regular Riviera Maya hotel is cheaper. For 3+ park days, the All-Fun-Inclusive math starts to favor the hotel. I broke this down at length in is Hotel Xcaret worth it.

Who's a fit for what

Just visit Xcaret park (no hotel stay) if you:

  • Are in Riviera Maya for a beach trip and want one park day
  • Are staying at a different (cheaper) hotel
  • Are doing a long weekend that doesn't justify the hotel premium
  • Want to see Xcaret park specifically, not the resort

Stay at Hotel Xcaret if you:

  • Will do 3+ Grupo Xcaret parks during your stay
  • Have a multi-gen family that wants a base camp
  • Want the food range of 10+ on-property restaurants
  • Are doing a longer trip (5+ nights) where the bundling pays off
  • Want a property that's the destination itself

The how many days do you need guide can help you figure out trip length.

What's confusing — and what I clarify for friends

Friends often ask me "are you staying AT Xcaret or just going TO Xcaret?" I get the question all the time. The brand confusion is real and Grupo Xcaret hasn't done much to fix it.

A few clarifications I make regularly:

  • Hotel Xcaret is one of three hotels (México, Arte, Casa de la Playa). When people say "Hotel Xcaret" without specifying, they usually mean México.
  • The park is older than the hotel. Most reviews and photos that come up when you search "Xcaret" are about the park, not the hotel.
  • You can do the park without ever touching the hotel. And many do.
  • You can stay at the hotel without doing the park. It's wasteful (you paid for park access), but possible.
  • The other Grupo Xcaret parks (Xel-Há, Xplor, etc.) are separate from Xcaret park. They're a 20 to 60 min drive away each.

What I'd do differently

If I were planning my first Riviera Maya trip today and wanted to see Xcaret:

  • Tight budget or 1-park trip: Stay at a Playa del Carmen hotel ($150 to $300/night), buy one Xcaret Plus ticket, call it $700 to $1,200 for two people for the park experience.
  • Mid-range, 3-park trip: Stay at Hotel Xcaret México (5 nights, $450 to $700/night), use All-Fun-Inclusive on three park days. ~$3,000 to $4,500 for two people, all-in.
  • Splurge / multi-gen: Stay at Casa de la Playa for the adults-only luxury experience, or Hotel Xcaret México for the family-friendly version with kids' club.

What I'd avoid: paying Hotel Xcaret rates and only doing one park. That's the worst-of-both-worlds option and I see people do it.

What people also ask

Is Hotel Xcaret inside the park? No. The hotel is adjacent to the park, separated by walls. The boat shuttle connects them via the underground river network.

Can I walk from the hotel to the park? Not directly. The boat shuttle is the connection for hotel guests. Day-trippers enter through the highway gates.

How many Grupo Xcaret parks are there? Currently six parks: Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xenses and Xoxi, plus tours such as Xenotes and Xichén (Chichén Itzá). Xavage has been closed since November 2024. The which Grupo Xcaret park guide breaks down each.

Does the hotel own the park? Both are owned by Grupo Xcaret. Same parent company. Same brand. Different operations.

Should I do Xcaret park in my one Riviera Maya day if I'm not staying at the hotel? Yes if it's your first trip — Xcaret park is the best of the Grupo Xcaret parks for a first visit. Otherwise consider Xel-Há (more chill, snorkel-focused) or Xplor (more adventure).
